A Gary man is facing an attempted murder case after a beating left his girlfriend with a fractured spine, eye and possible broken neck, court charges allege.

Oscar T. Lee, 50, is also charged with criminal confinement, aggravated battery and domestic battery resulting in serious bodily injury.

He is in custody, court records show.

Gary Police responded at 11:28 p.m. Sept. 24 to the 1300 block of W. 5th Avenue after someone called the police, saying a short Black man with a “gash” on his cheek was “pounding” a woman’s head “into the concrete,” according to an affidavit.

In the apartment lobby, they saw the woman on the ground with a swollen face and bleeding nose, documents state. A man in a green hoodie — later identified as Lee — was standing over her, “yelling profanities,” police wrote.

The sweatshirt and his hands were “covered” with blood, charges allege.

Lee claimed that the woman set him up earlier and a man had beaten Lee with a baseball bat, the affidavit states. A witness said Lee was “stomping” on the woman “as she (lay) on the ground defenseless,” police wrote. She was transported to the hospital. Medical staff told investigators they put her into a medically-induced coma.
