An Elgin man who beat and stabbed a woman while holding her captive three years ago has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Darnell L. Rhodes, 35, of the 1200 block of Fleetwood Drive, was convicted by a jury in August 2025 of aggravated kidnapping inflicting great bodily harm, a class X felony.
According to prosecutors, Rhodes and another man abducted the woman — someone he knew — at knifepoint on March 13, 2023, and drove her to one of their homes, a Kane County state’s attorney’s offcie news release. There, she was bound with electrical cords, stabbed in both legs and beaten.
“The victim sustained a nondisplaced fracture of her left rib, a fractured right pinky finger, a stab wound to her right upper leg and three stab wounds to her left leg, and numerous additional injuries, including bruises, trauma to her left forearm, and blunt force injuries to her head and face, leaving both eyes swollen shut,” the release said.
Prosecutors did not provide a motive for the attack, or provide more information on how the woman knew her attackers.
Kane County Judge John Barsanti handed down the sentence, of which Rhodes must serve at least 85% under state law. He will receive credit for the 1,283 days he’s spent in Kane County jail awaiting the resolution of the case.
“The victim in this case showed courage in attending this trial and incredible toughness in surviving that night,” Assistant State’s Attorney Mark Stajdohar said in the release. “The office of the Kane County state’s attorney and all of its members stand with this victim. Our thoughts are always with her, and our greatest hope is that she will one day put this day behind her.”
