A Streator man has been found guilty of first-degree murder in connection with the 2021 shooting death of a 29-year-old Aurora man in Montgomery, according to the Kane County state’s attorney’s office.

The incident happened about 11:30 a.m. Jan. 12, 2021, when Rodolfo Cervantes Madrigal, 46, was driving onto the ramp for Route 30 in Montgomery at the same time as Andrew Contreras, 29, of Aurora, a state’s attorney’s office news release said. Madrigal pulled his car alongside Contreras’ and fired multiple shots into the vehicle before driving away, prosecutors said.

Four of the bullets struck Contreras, killing him, the release said. Contreras’ 6-year-old child and a friend also in the vehicle were not shot.

Despite Madrigal later attempting to switch his license plate with that of another car, Montgomery Police Department were able to identify him as the shooter and arrested him in October 2022.

Madrigal was convicted by a Kane County jury of first-degree murder as well as personally discharging the firearm used in the murder, resulting in a mandatory 25-year sentencing enhancement, the release said. He faces a minimum of 45 years in prison when sentenced.

Madrigal remains in custody at the Kane County jail. His next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 22.
