The approved contracts are for up to $1,443,000 for the new pool and an additional $71,048 for play equipment for the pool.
“The pool was last renovated in 1992, it’s 33 years old, and it’s time to be replaced,” Village Board member Michelle Fisher said. “Overall, this is a beautifully-planned project.”
The Hinsdale Community Pool, 500 W. Hinsdale Ave., was constructed in 1969. After more than thirty years of service, the children’s pool has reached the end of its useful life, said Mike Hayes, parks and recreation superintendent. He said during the 2024 and 2025 pool seasons, the pool experienced significant water loss caused by underground plumbing failures.
“Although emergency repairs were completed, engineers determined that additional leaks existed beneath the pool slab and could not be reliably repaired without extensive demolition,” Hayes said, adding that the children’s pool no longer meets current building and accessibility standards.
The children’s activity pool was taken out of service at the end of the 2025 season. During that year, the village hired Williams Architects to assist with the design and construction services for the new pool project.
“After evaluating multiple repair options, Williams Architects concluded that replacing the children’s pool is the most cost-effective long-term solution because it eliminates recurring repairs, modernizes the facility, improves accessibility, and provides a new interactive Vortex water play environment for young children,” Hayes said.
He said Williams Architects has designed the project to use a product called Vortex for the play features.
“The Vortex system was selected due to its ability to meet the project’s budget objectives, while providing flexibility for future enhancements and modifications,” Hayes said. “Unlike many traditional water play structures, individual Vortex features can be added, removed, or reconfigured over time with minimal impact to the pool infrastructure, allowing the village to adapt the play area to future needs and trends.”
Work on the new children’s pool is scheduled to begin this fall to allow for a 2027 opening.
