A heat advisory is in effect from noon until 9 p.m. Tuesday as heat indices are expected between 100 to 110 degrees, weather officials said.

Several counties in Illinois, including northern and central Cook, DuPage, Lake, Kane, DeKalb, Lee, Ogle, McHenry, Boone and Winnebago, are expected to feel the extreme heat, officials said.

The heat and high humidity may cause heat illnesses, according to the National Weather Service.

Officials said if showers and thunderstorms move across the area later Tuesday morning, the area may not experience the extreme temperatures. There is a 20% chance of showers Tuesday.

Current afternoon conditions at O’Hare International Airport are partly cloudy at 82 degrees. Farther south at Midway Airport, conditions are similar at 85 degrees, officials said. There is a 20 percent chance of rain Tuesday afternoon.

Temperatures in the low 90s are expected Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday, temperatures in the low 80s and scattered thunderstorms are expected.

National Weather Service meteorologist Zachary Yack said earlier he expects the more severe thunderstorms to be done by Wednesday.

During the extreme heat, officials caution to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks from the heat, and to apply sunscreen every two hours and to avoid drinking alcohol during the high temperatures.
