The top public high schools on the North Shore and in Chicago’s north suburbs jostled for position on this year’s U.S. News & World report of high school rankings, with Adlai Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire again gaining Illinois’ top spot for public, non-selective enrollment high schools and other schools wedging into place above New Trier High School in Winnetka and Northfield, a traditional academic powerhouse in the state.

You won’t find suburban public high schools, as good as they are, at the top of the heap, though. Those slots go to Chicago Public Schools’ selective enrollment schools, such as Northside College Prep, which ranked number one in the state among public schools, and Walter Payton College Preparatory High School, which came in second.

Both of those admit fewer than 5% of students who apply to get in, per baiduhai reporting. Slots 3, 5 and 7 in the state were also filled by CPS selective enrollment schools.

By contrast, suburban public schools admit 100% of students who live in their school districts.

This year, U.S. News & World’s rankings show Hinsdale Central gaining the second-highest place for non-selective public high schools in Illinois, and Lake Forest High School taking third in that category.

Here are the ways non-selective suburban public high schools on the North Shore stacked up, with schools in some other areas added for clarity. The national figures given are for all Illinois public high schools, including selective and non-selective schools.
