A Naperville man allegedly brandished a machete-style knife at two Naperville apartment building employees before barricading himself inside a unit, officials said.

Daniel O’Neill, 35, of the 300 block of North Charles Street, is accused of chasing the two workers into a maintenance room about 2 p.m. Wednesday and striking the door with the knife when he was unable to get inside, according to a Naperville Police Department news release.

He then retreated to his apartment, where he remained barricaded for several hours.

Officers trained in crisis negotiations made numerous attempts to contact O’Neill, who refused to respond, the release said. Tactical team members then flew a drone into O’Neil’s apartment in an attempt to divert him, but the suspect allegedly disabled it and threw it to the ground.

“Officers ultimately deployed a distraction device into the apartment after which O’Neill exited and was taken into custody without further incident,” the release said.

O’Neill has been charged with felony criminal damage to government supported property as well as misdemeanor aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, reckless conduct, criminal damage to property and disorderly conduct.
