Two people are facing multiple felony charges after a man was attacked and his small dog killed during a home invasion Monday in unincorporated Naperville.

Nicole S. Smith, 40, of the 1500 block of Watkins Lane, Naperville, and Andre C. Bridges, 35, of the 1300 block of North Annie Glidden Road, DeKalb, have been charged with home invasion causing injury, home invasion with a firearm, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated animal cruelty, according to DuPage County court records.

On Wednesday, a DuPage County judge ordered they be held at the DuPage County jail pending trial.

According to detention petitions filed by prosecutors, Smith and Bridges allegedly knew the victim, who refused to let Bridges into his home when he rang the buzzer at the entrance to his apartment building in the 30W000 block of Capistrano Court about 12:20 p.m. Monday.

However, the victim left the door unlocked when he went to see who was buzzing, allowing Smith to get into the apartment, the petitions said. Smith allegedly sprayed the man in the face with bear repellent, prompting him to run to a bathroom and to call 911, the account said.

He heard a gunshot and when he came out several minutes later, he discovered his dog, a 3-year-old Maltese-Yorkshire Terrier mix, had been shot to death, the petitions said.

The man told police that his dog and Smith’s dog came from the same litter. He had recently been trying to “distance himself” from Smith and Bridges, according to the police report.

The two suspects are scheduled to next be in court Aug. 24.
