A portion of the Fox River Trail in Geneva is going to be closed for two months due to the construction of a new sanitary sewer river crossing, the city said on Tuesday.

Starting July 27, the trail will be closed near Geneva’s wastewater treatment plant, located south of the Union Pacific-West railway and east of the Fox River, according to a news release from the city of Geneva. That section of the trail is set to reopen in late September, weather permitting.

Cyclists and pedestrians looking to travel that part of the path will have a detour available to them during the closure, the city said. Those looking to travel along the trail will be detoured onto a temporary gravel path connecting to an existing wastewater treatment plant roadway, which will navigate trail users through the facility’s campus back to the Fox River Trail.

A map from the city showing the closure and detour route is available at: https://www.geneva.il.us/DocumentCenter/View/17349/Fox-River-Trail-Detour-Route-Wastewater-Treatment-Plant-River-Crossing-Construction.

The detour route will be fenced on both sides of the roadway, and signage will be posted, the city said in the news release, though officials are encouraging the public to exercise caution in the area since the wastewater treatment plant is an active city facility and construction zone. While the plant’s roadway is typically used for city vehicles, the city is planning to limit vehicular traffic to minimize disruptions.

The project’s contractor will have trucks and equipment staged at the north end of the plant, the news release noted, and flaggers will be used when needed to direct bicycle and pedestrian traffic.

The work being done in the area involves replacing the existing 20-inch sanitary sewer river crossing with two new 20-inch sanitary sewers, per the city, which is meant to reduce the risk of sanitary overflows. The crossing carries all sanitary flow from the west side of Geneva to the wastewater treatment plant.

The project started

in April, and is expected to take about 18 to 24 months to complete.

According to the city, any updates to the project timeline will be posted at: https://www.geneva.il.us/1690/Wastewater-System-Improvements.
