Plans to renovate the main entrances of Dwight D. Eisenhower High School, in Blue Island, and Harold L. Richards High School, in Oak Lawn, are moving forward.

The project will cost $4.26 million and will be constructed using existing fund balances, meaning no new debt will be taken out for the construction, according to High School District 218 public information specialist Andrea Azzo.

The project’s goal is to “establish a modern, well-defined main entrance” at the two high schools, Azzo said.

“It’ll make a big difference,” said Superintendent Josh Barron. “Much more welcoming and customer service-oriented, and more functional.”

The District 218 board unanimously approved during a meeting March 18.

The layout of Eisenhower High School’s main entrance will be updated to connect the administrative and counseling offices to the main entrance, while the facade at Richards High School will be updated to resolve water issues, Azzo said.

Design options are still under discussion.

Pepper Construction and Ujamaa Construction will work on the project, Azzo said. The district has worked with the two construction firms on other projects.
