A garage fire late Monday evening left an Aurora home uninhabitable after the fire extended into the house, Aurora Fire Department officials said.

Firefighters were called to a house on the 3000 block of Secretariat Drive just before 10:45 p.m. for reports of a garage fire on the city’s far north side, officials said in a news release.

The home’s two residents were able to evacuate before firefighters arrived, according to the release. Upon arrival, crews saw fire extending into the interior portions of the home, officials said.

It took around 40 minutes to bring the fire under control, according to officials. Firefighters remained on scene for an additional three hours putting out hot spots.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The residents are staying with other family members after the home was deemed uninhabitable, officials said.
