Certified results of vote totals from last month’s Democratic primary election show a Dolton write-in candidate for trustee who was backed by Mayor Tiffany Henyard fell short of securing a seat.

Joslyn King received 791 write-in votes, or a bit more than 10% of the total vote, giving her the fifth-highest vote total for one of three nominations, according to results posted Thursday by the Cook County clerk’s office.

Incumbent Trustee Andrew Holmes, supported by Henyard, was the top vote-getter with 1,489 votes, followed by Stanley “Stan” Brown, also backed by Henyard, who received 1,354 votes, according to the certified results.

They along with incumbent Trustee Tammie Brown, who received 1,026 votes, will be on the April 4 ballot, unopposed, according to the clerk’s office.

Incumbent Trustee Edward “Ed” Steave lost his bid with 979 votes, while running mate Samysha “Mesha” Williams had 772 votes, according to the certified results.

King, who works as an executive administrator in Thornton Township, was knocked off the primary ballot due to a successful objection to her petitions, so mounted a write-in campaign.

Henyard, the day after the Feb. 28 contest, declared in a Facebook post that King had received enough write-in votes to secure the nomination. At the March 6 Village Board meeting, the mayor also asserted that King had won the primary.

While Henyard gained a supporter, her opponents will still have a 4-2 majority on the Village Board instead of the current 5-1.
