Camera shutters click-click-clicked Friday afternoon as Mitch Trubisky struck a familiar pose in an unfamiliar place.

On his 20-hour whirlwind from the NFL draft in Philadelphia to Bears headquarters in Lake Forest, his welcome tour led to the press conference room, where reporters waited for the newly minted face of the franchise.

He held court for 12 minutes. Topics zigzagged from his 1997 Toyota Camry to his career at North Carolina to his ability to handle media criticism. Then it was time for another photo op in a week full of them.

The quarterback, whom the Bears traded up to draft with the No. 2 overall pick Thursday, held up a navy jersey with his name across the back.

And he strained.

“I’ve been smiling too much the last couple days,” he said. “I can’t do it no more. I’m too happy.”

Still, Trubisky managed. The energy remaining from his moment of validation Thursday, combined with the thrill of opportunity, pushed Trubisky’s fatigued face muscles into place. The resulting image is sure to last as long as Ryan Pace occupies the general manager’s office at Halas Hall.

“It’s going to be a perfect fit,” Trubisky said.

It better be.

Pace has cast his lot with a quarterback who started only 13 games at North Carolina. Entering his third year as general manager with only nine wins, Pace showed the football world just how much he believes in the 22-year-old Mentor, Ohio, native by trading three mid-round draft picks for the opportunity to pick him.

But while Chicago’s sports conversation on radio and social media Friday centered on the wisdom of Pace’s aggressive attempt to solve the Bears’ long-standing quarterback troubles, Trubisky’s day in Chicago was a celebratory romp that included attending the Bulls-Celtics playoff game at the United Center on Friday night.

He soaked up the latest milestone of his jump to the NFL. While waiting for a TV crew to set up lighting for a sit-down interview at Halas Hall, he meandered over to a display of a game program and ticket stub from 1925. Before that, he let on that his favorite retired player growing up was Walter Payton because the first book he read from his elementary school’s library was a Payton biography.

“I’m looking forward to wearing the Bears jersey like he did,” Trubisky said.

Actually, he won’t just wear the colors on his back. The organization will sit on his shoulders.

Inside his new workplace, he bear-hugged a face-of-the-franchise label that, even with his highly touted mobility, he couldn’t escape if he tried.

“I’m just going to do the right things like I’ve always done,” Trubisky said. “Stay true to myself, and you’ve got to be a leader. You’ve got to be the first one in the door and last one out. You’ve got to be the hardest-working guy. You’ve got to be the most knowledgeable, and you’ve got to be competitive. I don’t think anyone wants to win more than I do. Hopefully I can bring that to this organization.”

That vow to stay true apparently means sticking with his old car for a while longer.

Pace ribbed Trubisky about it Thursday. In March, as Bears brass departed their dinner with Trubisky in North Carolina, Pace began laughing near the quarterback’s beige Camry in the parking lot.

“There are some hub caps that are missing, and the thing is just kind of falling apart,” Pace told reporters Thursday. “We joked at that moment. Like, ‘Hey, you need to bring this car to Chicago. Don’t change.’ And he’s like, ‘I don’t know if it’s going to make it to Chicago.’ And I said, ‘I don’t care if you have to change the engine, but you have to bring the shell.’ So hopefully he brings it.”

“It’s got 170,000 miles on it,” Trubisky said. “It can still lug around a little bit and it moves pretty well. It gets me from Point A to Point B.”

Trubisky eventually must do the same for a franchise that has been stuck on Point A for far too long. The Bears see him more like a Ferrari fresh off the showroom floor. And although Pace has vowed to keep him in the garage for 2017, the engine is already revving.
