The vast canvas, painted in 1937, commemorates the Nazi bombing of the Basque city Guernica during Spain’s civil war. Picasso, who died in exile in 1973, vowed it would not enter Spain until democracy had been restored.
The work, kept in New York for 42 years, depicts the horrors of war in cartoon-like black and white figures and had come to symbolize Spain’s return to democracy 20 years ago this month.
